Oil-based and Syrup-based Essentials – Rational

On my website Dr Hermann’s Essentails you will find oil-based and syrup-based products containing essential oils. The rationale behind this is that essential oils are composed of organic substances insoluble in water, but soluble in alcohol or oils.

In oil-based essentials, the main ingredient is extra virgin olive oil. Essential oils dissolve instantly in olive oil or any other liquid fatty oils such as the oils of avocados, sunflowers, corn, canola, and many more. The oil-based essentials are intended to be used in food. They can also be used in cocktails. However, despite vigorously mixing, the olive oil with the dissolved essential oils will separate from the aqueous cocktail mixture and will float on top as droplets. As a result, the first few sips of the cocktail have the strong flavor of the essential oil whereas the remainder has less and less.

In syrup-based essentials, with an aqueous syrup solution as the main ingredient, essential oils won’t dissolve. Keeping the essential oils in suspension, dispersed in fine droplets, is very tricky and requires the development of special formulations. The syrup-based essentials are intended to be used in beverages and cocktails. This special formulation ensures that the essential oils are dispersed evenly in beverages or cocktails.
