Ditch the Chemicals: An Effective DIY Essential Oil Insect Repellent

Ditch the Chemicals: An Effective DIY Essential Oil Insect Repellent

Are insects invading your kitchen or home? Instead of reaching for harsh chemical sprays, why not use the power of nature? We’re sharing a simple, effective, and non-toxic DIY project to keep pests at bay using our potent Insect Repellent concentrated essential oil mixture.

This method is a great alternative to our convenient, ready-to-use liquid spray bottle, offering a more concentrated approach to target problem areas directly.

Why Use Essential Oils as an Insect Repellent?

Many common insects are repelled by the strong aromatic compounds found in certain essential oils. This natural approach is safe for your home, family, and pets (when used as directed), without the unpleasant smell of toxic chemicals. It’s an eco-friendly solution that really works.

How to Make Your Natural Insect Repellent Station

This project couldn’t be easier. You only need three things:

  • A small bowl

  • About 5 cotton balls (adjust based on bowl size)

  • Dr. Hermann’s Insect Repellent concentrated oil mixture

Instructions:

  1. Take your first cotton ball and add 0.5 mL (½ dropper) of the concentrated oil mixture to one side.

  2. Turn the cotton ball over and add another 0.5 mL (½ dropper) to the other side, ensuring it is fully saturated.

  3. Repeat this process for the remaining cotton balls.

  4. Place the saturated cotton balls in the bowl.

  5. Set the bowl in a location where you’ve spotted unwanted guests—common spots are near fruit bowls, windowsills, under sinks, or along baseboards where ants travel.

The saturated cotton balls will act as a powerful, slow-diffusing repellent, deterring everything from ants and fruit flies to other crawling or flying insects.
