Jazz up Spirits

Figure 1: Examples of spiced vodka

Alcoholic beverages like rum, gin, and tequila, have a particular flavor and taste, can be used in cocktails or you can drink it straight on ice. Vodka is a different story; vodka has a characteristic flavor and taste but compared to rum it’s flavor is bland.

When you go to your local wine and liquor store you will find plain vodka and rum on the shelves but in addition flavored vodka and flavored rum is offered as an alternative. The flavors for vodka range from citroen to pickle flavor and for rum from pineapple to coconut. Examples of flavored vodka is shown in Figure 1 and flavored rum in Figure 2.

What would you say if I tell you can make your own flavored vodka, rum, gin or tequila at home for a fraction of the cost.

At the moment, 6 different flavored Dr Hermann’s Essentials solid sugar-based products are available: oils of yellow tangerine, blood orange, lemon, peppermint, lime, and grapefruit.

Fill a shot glass with vodka or any other alcoholic beverage, pour into a glass (preferentially a white wine glass for easy mixing) and add ¼ teaspoon of the solid sugar-based oil of your choice. Swirl until all the sugar is dissolved. Transfer into another glass with ice, gently swirl and your flavored vodka is ready, sp easy. Cheers.

More information on how to make the solid sugar-based essential oils is provided on my website drhermannessentialoils.com. However, for those of you who don’t want to make their own solid sugar-based essential oils, pre-made products are available and can be purchased by visiting my website drmermannessentialoils.com.
